Discover how visual stress assessment and treatment at Bawtry Eye Academy can transform your reading experience.
What is visual stress?
Visual stress, or Meares-Irlen Syndrome, affects how the brain interprets what the eyes see. It can make reading tiring or uncomfortable, with words appearing blurred, crowded, or moving, often causing eye strain, headaches, or difficulty concentrating. While different from dyslexia, both conditions can occur together. Visual stress can affect both children and adults.
Who is a visual stress assessment for?
Early detection of visual stress can boost reading, focus, and confidence. This service benefits children struggling with reading – especially if they skip lines – students who lose concentration, and adults experiencing eye strain, discomfort, or screen-related headaches.
What to expect during your assessment
Every assessment is carried out by an experienced optometrist using specialist Thomson software. The process is gentle, interactive, and tailored to each person’s pace.
After discussing symptoms and reading habits, our iPad based system presents a selection of different colours over text to see if symptoms can be reduced and reading speed or confidence improved. If colour provides significant relief, further precision tint testing can be carried out to identify the exact shade for tinted glasses or clip-ons.
Non-invasive and child-friendly, each assessment includes a written report for school or work, and is offered at a reduced private rate for accessibility.
Treatment options
Once we identify a helpful colour, we can provide coloured overlays to be used during reading sessions, or precision tinted lenses to provide relief for everyday tasks. Every treatment is personalised to suit each patient’s unique visual profile, and we provide ongoing support with regular follow-ups to ensure lasting comfort and effectiveness.
